GOLDEN YEARS DIMMED FOR ONE FEDERAL HEIGHTS COUPLE
Residence Accessibility: A Growing Concern For Older Adults Opting To Stay In Own Homes

Denver, CO August 20, 2007 - The retirement years were proving quite strenuous on a Federal Heights couple for whom every trip outside of the house was a serious, if not dangerous, chore.  The chore was created by a set of stairs outside their lovely home, which the husband, who uses a walker, had to navigate several times in order to assist his wife, who needs a wheelchair, to the car.  The process was lengthy and somewhat frightening, and it could have been remedied by simply installing a sturdy wheelchair ramp in place of the stairs.  After seeing an ad in Prime Time for Seniors, the husband contacted Ramps By Design for an estimate.  Ramps By Design’s survey led to a suitable and attractive design; however, the couple needed help with such an immediate expense.  That’s when Ramps By Design put them in touch with Rebuilding Together Metro Denver.  On Saturday, August 11, 2007, Rebuilding Together Metro Denver and Ramps By Design partnered to simplify the couple’s life with the installation of a wheelchair ramp at no charge.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that falls and fires are the leading contributors to injury related deaths in Americans over the age of 65.  The risk of a fall negotiating their steps was very real and made it imperative to simplify access to this home.  Thankfully, the couple had a history of getting in and out of the home without incident. The new wheelchair ramp will help ensure that they continue to do so.

The ramp was installed by an in-house team of volunteers from Ramps By Design, which also contributed 41% of the materials.  Rebuilding Together Metro Denver covered the remainder of the materials with a grant from the Colorado Trust Healthy Aging Initiative.  The purpose behind this grant money is to provide urgent/emergency needs for older adult homeowners.  When representatives from Ramps By Design observed the couple’s daily routine and conveyed it to the Program Director at Rebuilding Together, everyone agreed that this was an ideal use of the available grant.
